Ellerslie Cricket Club

Kris Baker: A thank you

The 2018/19 season will be the first in over 15 years in which Kris Baker would not be involved in some Capacity. The Committee would like to take this opportunity to recognize Kris' immense contribution.

As a player, our scorer and life member, Frank Lancaster recollects -

"Kris came to the Ellerslie cricket club via Cornwall as he was struggling to get a match in any grade there. He very quickly showed his potential and was promoted to the Premier side. I can remember his first game very well. He went out to bat in a difficult situation as he was primarily a bowler then. He played and missed at the first three balls he faced and the non-striking batsman, Martin Pringle, came down the wicket and told him just to "whack" it. The next ball sailed back over the bowler's head for six. Kris's contribution on the playjng field were immense. Whether it was scoring runs or taking wickets he was for many years the mainstay of the Ellerslie team. Through the Ellerslie/University amalagamation he led the team in run scoring. Kris enjoyed playing Waitakere very much and against them he produced his best bowling figures, 7-17, and scored 2 centuries. Towards the end of his career Kris was troubled by injuries which curtailed his time on the field. In his prime i think that Kris would have a place in the Ellerslie Premier team at any period of time. Kris was always Ellerslie "hard".

As an administrator, Kris stepped into the role of President, following a large exodus of committee members the previous season. With a very young committee, an unhealthy financial position and a club transitioning out of the University/Ellerslie amalgamation, the challenges were of a large scale. Through hard work and collaboration Kris re established a strong relationship with Auckland Cricket and restructured the club manager's role to allow a streamlined approach which would create an easier to manage structure. Kris was always a pillar of strength and determination and his biggest legacy is the strong financial position the club in now in and allowed to invest in different areas to achieve their goals.

The club wishes Kris all the best in his business and family endeavors and hopes that once the workload eases that we will see him and his family down at the ground watching the next generation of players with the leather and willow. Thank you for all your efforts, Kris.
