Ellerslie 2016/17 Senior Reports: Senior A

Senior A

v Cornwall @ Michaels Avenue 1 (04 Feb)

Ellerslie: 152-10 in 41.5 overs (Archit Deshpande 31 [65]) LOST against Cornwall: 169-9 in 45 overs (MIlan Jasarevic 3-27) by 17 runs

Another agonisingly close defeat to close signified the end of the one day games for Senior A this weekend.

Winning the toss and bowling first we restricted the score to just 46-4 at drinks (22 overs) before a 96 run partnership threatened to take the score away from us in the second half innings. Some fine death bowling though stopped any momentum the batsmen had restricting the score to 169-9 off the full 45 overs, Milan being the pick of the bowlers with 3-27.

Needing less than 4 an over we were confident of chasing this score down but the loss of wickets at key times halted any momentum we had in our innings resulting in us being 104-8 with just 11 overs remaining, despite Archie scoring 31 at the top of the innings. This brought together Sam (25 off 21) and Jeremy (13* off 22) who between them pushed us up to the score and left us needing a run a ball in the last 5 overs before falling short by just 17 runs.

Four two day games remain in the season and we will need to win all four convincingly to challenge for promotion.

Performance of the day: Jeremy Myers 2-27 and 13* off 22

v Howick Pakuranga @ Lloyd Elsmore 2 (28 Jan)

Ellerslie: 167-5 in 32.4 overs (Parikshith Narsimhan 62 [67]) WON against Howick Pakuranga: 163-10 in 43.2 overs by 5 wickets

Another good all round team performance at the weekend produced another fine win.

After losing the toss (again) and being asked to bowl first (again) we were hopeful of knocking the top order over cheaply, but this time around wickets were harder to come by. This meant that the bowlers had to remain patient and consistent, which we did thanks to fine spells from Shikhir (1-26), Archie (2-15) and Mahesh (2-31) before Rohan (2-3) cleaned up the tail to bowl Howick out for 163 from 43.2 overs.

This target always looked to be achievable and thanks to a well paced opening partnership of 39 from just 8 overs followed up by a good innings from Pari (62 off 67 balls) we were able to pass the score 5 wickets down from just 32.4 overs, a timely boost to our net run rate.

This leaves just one more one day game to go against top of the table Cornwall, a win in this game will bring us level with them on points which would be a great boost going into the final two day games.

Performance of the day: Parikshith Narsimhan 62 off 67

v Waitakere @ Te Atatu 2 (21 Jan)

Ellerslie: 133-5 in 31.2 overs (Shikhir Saini 40 [65], Prathik Kumar 33* [35]) WON against Waitakere: 132-10 in 40.4 overs (Kuvam Manon 3-25) by 5 wickets

After the disappointment of last week we went into this week's game looking to bounce back strongly.

We again lost the toss and again were asked to bowl first which is what we were looking to do. Quite happy with this outcome we set about removing the top order cheaply again, the first five wickets falling with just 47 runs on the board. After a short period of resistance Kuvam Manon on debut bowled a superb spell of bowling to pick up three wickets for just 25 runs from an unbroken 9 overs and then followed this up with a good catch for the tenth wicket to restrict Waitakere to just 132.

This total never looked like being enough with Shikhir Saini scoring 40 from 65 to set us on our way. There was a brief wobble with two wickets falling in the space of three balls and still 20 runs to win but Prathik Kumar (33* off 35) ensured we got home with no further loss to record a fine 5 wicket win and keep our chances of topping the league alive.

A good all round performance and with two games remaining we sit in the top three and well placed to push for top spot.

Performance of the day: Kuvam Manon 3-25 on debut, Prathik Kumar 33* [35] and no byes conceded behind the stumps.

v Suburbs New Lynn @ Eastdale Reserve 1 (14 Jan)

Ellerslie: 175-10 in 40.3 overs (Parikshith Narsimhan 38 [40]) LOST against Suburbs New Lynn: 183-10 in 42.5 overs (Mahesh Kharvi 5-32) by 8 runs

A bitterly disappointing result for the boys this weekend. Losing the toss and being asked to bowl we made a good start making good early inroads to reduce Suburbs to 18-3 from the first 8 overs. From here a fine spell of bowling from Mahesh Kharvi reduced them further to 113-9, Mahesh helping himself to a personal best of 5-32 in the process. Unfortunately the last wicket proved harder to take, a partnership of 70 taking the score up to 183 which was particularly hard to read given a dropped a catch on just 130.

Despite this we were still confident of chasing this score down and made a fine start racing away to 82-2 off just 14 overs, Pari top scoring with 38 off 40 balls. Losing wickets in groups ultimately cost us though, losing wickets three to five for just 14 runs and wickets seven to nine for just three runs left us needing to score 37 with just one wicket in hand. We very nearly did this too through Melvyn Lucas and Andrew Scott before the last wicket fell with 9 more runs needed off 5 overs.

A game that was ours to win and had we held onto our catches, or one of the batsmen who got a start kicked on we would have done so.

Performance of the day: Mahesh Kharvi 5-32

v Howick Pakuranga @ Orakei Domain 1 (10 Dec & 17 Dec)

Ellerslie: 216-7 in 43.1 overs (Shikhir Saini 65 [74], Joshua Allan 52 [83], Daniel Kerr 41 [59]) WON FIRST INNINGS against Howick Pakuranga: 127-10 in 43 overs (Srirag Harish 3-18) by 8 wickets

Ellerslie finished 2016 with a good first innings victory over Howick Pakuranga.

After losing the toss and being asked to bowl on day 1 the bowlers made the most of the 33 overs available in the day reducing Howick to 77-7, Srirag Harish the pick of the bowlers with 3-18. When we returned on day 2 the two not out batsman chanced their arm with some fortunate shots to lift the score to 127 all out.

This proved no match for our batsmen though with Shikhir Saini (65 off 74) & Joshua Allan (52 off 83) putting on 104 for the second wicket and setting the platform for some quick runs from Daniel Kerr (41 off 59) and Rohan Dawson (27 off 21) to comfortable secure first innings points and declare with a lead of 89.

Howick's second innings yielded 4 more wickets for us giving us an extra bonus point for the game, a particularly fiery spell from Jeremy Myers the highlight.

4 wins from 6 games so far leaves us in a good position to push for promotion in 2017.

Performance of the day: Shikhir Saini 65 off 74.

v Suburbs New Lynn @ Ken Maunder 2 (26 Nov & 03 Dec)

Ellerslie: 102-2 in 42 overs (Abrar Allam 52*[134], Josh Allan 34[91]) LEAD against Suburbs New Lynn: 91-10 in 46 overs (Melvyn Lucas 7-16) by 11 runs

Thanks to all the rain on Friday our game was moved from Orakei Domain to Ken Maunder park this week and after last time outs outright defeat to Cornwall we were keen to get onto the field.

After losing the toss and being asked to bowl the start couldn't have been much better with the first two wickets falling before a run had been scored. Wickets continued to fall regularly with Melvyn Lucas taking 7 and Mahesh Kharvi 2 before some late resistance for the final wicket lifted the score up to 91 but all in all a good performance with the ball and in the field.

The Ellerslie innings was dominated by an 83 run second wicket partnership from Abrar Allam and Josh Allan, the latter falling with just two runs required to secure the first innings points. This didn't stop us securing the first innings points on day 1 and giving ourselves a platform to push for an outright victory next week.

Performance of the day: Melvyn Lucas 7-16, Abrar Allam 52* [134]

v Suburbs New Lynn @ Ken Maunder 2 (26 Nov & 03 Dec)

Ellerslie: 202-7 dec in 69 overs (Arbor Allam 79 [171], Josh Allan 34 [91], Sam Edkins 33 [48]) WON FIRST INNINGS against Suburbs New Lynn: 91-10 in 46 overs (Melvyn Lucas 7-16) and 208-8 in 61 overs (Melvyn Lucas 3-37, Jeremy Myers 2-24) by 8 wickets

Starting the day 11 runs ahead and with the first innings points already secured the plan for the day was to score quick runs to enable a declaration and enough time to push for an outright victory. This was achieved through Abrar pushing on from 52 to make 79, the 27 runs coming from 37 balls, accompanied by a 50 run partnership between Sam Edkins (33 off 48) and Jeremy Myers (22* off 28) before the declaration came with a lead of 111.

Ellerslie's bowlers set about putting us in a strong position with wickets falling regularly to reduce the Suburbs line up to 91-7. Unfortunately as the ball aged and the wicket flattened out wickets became harder to come by and there was only one further success before the close of play to prevent us claiming the outright victory.

A good all round performance though and good points picked up.

Performance of the day: Abrar Allam 79 [171], Jeremy Myers 22* [28] & 2-24

v Cornwall @ Michaels Avenue 1 (12 Nov & 19 Nov)

Ellerslie: 77 all out (Keshav Mohan 32) TRAIL against Cornwall: 79-2

A chastening experience for the boys this week as after two consecutive victories we slumped to a first innings loss on the first day against Cornwall.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first on a track that promised to be flat after getting through the new ball and early showers we did the hard work of getting up front by reaching 49-1 at the first drinks break. Unfortunately from there the batting line up collapsed to 77 all out.

Cornwall duly knocked this off in the second to last over of the day for the loss of just two wickets. We will be looking to make early inroads into the batting line up on day 2 in order to push for a reverse outright and a share of the points.

v Cornwall @ Michaels Avenue 1 (12 Nov & 19 Nov)

Ellerslie: 77-10 in 51.4 overs (Keshav Mohan 32 [102]) and 100-10 in 44.5 overs (Josh Allan 34 [65], Josh Adams 23* [65]) LOST OUTRIGHT against Cornwall: 121-10 in 54.5 overs (Melvyn Lucas 5-34, Rohan Dawson 2-3) by 8 wickets

With the first innings having already gone on day 1 we returned on day 2 knowing that we would need to knock the Cornwall batsmen over quickly to have any chance of forcing a reverse outright win.

With all the bad weather at the end of the week the wicket had taken on a rather green tinge which the Ellerslie bowlers exploited to take 8 wickets for just 42 runs, Melvyn picked up 5 wickets, Rohan two and Mahesh one.

Second time around on a far more difficult wicket to bat on the boys put up a better fight led by Josh Allan's battling 34 and a very composed 23 not out by Josh Adams at the end of the innings.

Being bowled out for 100 with just less than an hour left in the day meant that the equation was 57 runs needed off 13 overs. Unfortunately the Cornwall batsmen got there off 10.5 overs for the loss of just two wickets. Onwards to the next game where we hope to bounce back with a victory and improved performance.

Performance of the day: Melvyn Lucas 5-34, Josh Allan 34 off 65 balls

v Grafton @ Victoria Park 2 (04 Nov)

Ellerslie: 103-8 in 36.1 overs (Joshua Allan 31 [92]) WON against Grafton: 102-10 in 38.1 overs (Raghavan Thatta 2-7, Melvyn Lucas 2-14, Anand Gajelli 2-39) by 2 wickets.

Two Saturday's in a row have resulted in two nail biting finishes with the Ellerslie lower order eventually seeing us over the line for our second successive win.

Winning the toss and bowling first on a green track things got off to a great start with opening bowlers Melvyn Lucas & Rag Thatta reducing Grafton to 4-3. Anand Gajelli and Mahesh Kharvi (1-14 off 9 overs) continued the trend at first change and with Keshav Mohan & Rohan Dawson also chipping in with a wicket each Grafton were dismissed for 102. Coupled with a good all round bowling display this was one of the best fielding displays seen by this team in a couple of seasons capped off with an excellent run out by new recruit Abrar Allam.

With showers blowing over the wicket retained it's moisture throughout most of the game making the run chase not as straight forward as we would have liked. Joshua Allan was the pick of the batsmen, fighting his way through most of the innings for 31 off 92 balls before falling with just 16 more runs required. A late flurry of wickets caused a few nervous moments but a wide ball brought the victory to leave us with two wins from three games heading into the first two day next week.

Performance of the day: Raghavan Thatta 2-7, Joshua Allan 32 [92]

v Auckland Uni @ Colin Maiden Park C (29 Oct)

Ellerslie: 213-8 in 43.5 overs (Shikhir Saini 67 [63], Josh Allan 29 [42], D Kerr 20* [54]) WON against Auckland Uni: 209-9 in 45 overs (Melvyn Lucas 3-29, Shikhir Saini 2-44) by 2 wickets

Ellerslie senior A recorded their first win of the season in a close fought game agains Auckland Uni.

After losing the toss and being asked to bowl first the game couldn't have got off to a much better start as Uni were reduced to 30/5 off after just 10 overs with Melvyn Lucas picking up three of these. A couple of partnerships helped the score get up to 209 at the close of the innings despite a tight spell of bowling from Keshav Mohan (1-19 off 9 overs).

Chasing over 200 for the second consecutive work could have been a daunting task but despite an early wobble we crossed the line with just 7 balls remaining and two wickets in hand. Shikhir Saini contributed a fine 67 off 63 balls before his wicket preceded a late wobble, but up stepped Daniel Kerr to close the game out and ensure a win for the boys.

Performance of the day: Shikhir Saini 67 off 63 and 2-44
